CAL was born (in part) out of a response to #Exti CAL was born (in part) out of a response to #ExtinctionRebellion  - to promote action via #Community and local politics as opposed to the more divisive strategies employed by XR.

But next Friday is the start of THE BIG ONE, bringing together many local groups, national groups and everyday people who stand for #ClimateJustice and #ClimateActionNow! This isn't about civil disobedience or arrests - this is a new direction for XR, to get people together in their masses to tell our government that #EnoughIsEnough, #WeDeserveBetter!

🌱 #ThisIsTheWork 💪 we must #UniteToSurvive 💚 #ChooseYourFuture 🔮

We'll see you at #TheBigOne

Back at the tree, third day running for me, fourth Back at the tree, third day running for me, fourth day this week. Every morning I get up at 5am, cycle over to Senlac road and hold my breath until I see the frosty tree still there and the car still under it. Thank God.

A local supporter said yesterday "they may destroy this tree, and say sorry, but then there'll be another one, and another one and another one...". She is right.

We are not alone in this struggle to protect trees: it's happening all over the country. The more of us who do it, the more pressure and impetus there is for changes in the law to protect trees for the future. At the moment everything is stacked against the lives of trees that may be deemed inconvenient for human plans.

We have already lost so much. Our tree cover in the UK is 13.2% of our total land mass: lower than all other European countries except Holland and 136th of 191 countries worldwide. That figure on a slightly upward trend overall (enthusiastic tree planting) but the vast majority of our trees are plantations, with only 19% of the 'forest' being trees outside woodlands, including this one, and 15% being ancient woodland. Woodland biodiversity counts are down dramatically. See more from the Woodland trust here: https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/state-of-uk-woods-and-trees/

We have so little left, we must fight like hell to save every last scrap, every molecule matters. It's our blood, our spirit, our humanity and our future. Please let Joni Mitchel have been very very wrong about tree museums, and charging people a dollar and a half just to see'em.

This is why I get up early and freeze my t*ts off in a car in a London suburb 3 miles from my home in order to prevent the felling of one tree. Please please join me. Send me a DM if you could spare an hour or two. It's all legit, promise (at the moment).
We've got national coverage for the #senlacroad pl We've got national coverage for the #senlacroad plane tree in the Daily Express! This is on Lewisham turf but it's a national issue: the lack of legal protection for mature trees, and the communities that benefit and cherish them. We wrote a blog about this case recently, but it's a wider issue than local authorities can tackle alone. Good news: none of us are alone in this struggle. https://climateactionlewisham.org/2022/12/03/why-lewisham-council-is-being-two-faced-on-trees-and-greening/ #trees #Lewisham #wearelewisham #climateemergency #community #maturetrees #nationaltreeweek
And on the ninth day of Christmas the Senlac road And on the ninth day of Christmas the Senlac road plane is still standing and we are continuing a daylight hours vigil to physically protect her from felling. Some media coverage in a coming in: https://www.mylondon.news/news/south-london-news/lewisham-woman-parks-car-underneath-25676388 #nationaltreeweek #Lewisham #wearelewisham #nature #community #senlacroad #saveourmaturetrees #lewishamcouncil
We're physically protecting this tree, the last re We're physically protecting this tree, the last remaining plane tree on Senlac road, as the council's contractors came on 1 December to fell it. We are moved to do this as all other appeals for clemency have failed so far. In 2921 46,000 people signed a petition to save the tree and there was a pause in the process. We will keep on obstructing any attempts at felling until we get a more constructive dialogue with the council and insurers of the tree, but we may need legal support before that bears any fruit. We have a crowdfunder, please contribute if you would like to support us, and/or contact us to do a couple of hours under the tree. https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/legal-support-for-lewisham-tree-protectors
